On October 9th 2015, John Lennon would have been celebrating what would have been his 75th birthday. Born in Liverpool in 1940, John’s childhood felt the effects of World War II and the food rationing that came with it.
John’s sister, Julia Baird, and his school friend, Tim Holmes, tell the story of their memories of that time. The pair, like John, grew up with food ration books with John’s ration area based in the same Penny Lane of Beatles song fame.
Like everything else in the aftermath of World War II, chocolate was in short supply. Each person would get one square of chocolate and John and Julia had an aunt who could make sublime chocolate cake, so all of their chocolate rations would be saved for birthdays and made into a cake and chocolate cake was John’s favourite.
To commemorate John’s 75th birthday, The Beatles Story and Julia teamed up with local organisation, Can Cook, to make a fantastic chocolate birthday cake and on what would have been John’s 75th birthday.
Following the launch of the cake and to make it an all year round celebration – we are delighted to launch the ‘Imagine No Food Poverty’ chocolate brownie which will be sold in multiple locations, including the Beatles Story.
For every brownie that is purchased, Can Cook will give towards a fresh meal to somebody in food poverty, making a direct connection to John’s early life to where food poverty is today here in the UK.
As the campaign develops the aim is to feed thousands of hungry people, good healthier food.
