The Beatles Story and Bonhams Collaborate to Exhibit George Harrison’s Famous Cavern Club Worn Leather Jacket
23/11/12 – 09:30
Liverpool’s awarding-winning Beatles Story has teamed up with international auction house Bonhams to give Liverpool’s music fanatics the opportunity to view a rare piece of Beatles history ahead of their December auction.
This 10 day exhibition was launched on Friday 23rd November at The Beatles Story with the unveiling of the leather jacket that George Harrison wore throughout the formative Beatles appearances in Hamburg and at Liverpool’s Cavern Club between 1960 – 1962.
The iconic leather jacket – which features in many of the band’s early promotion shots on permanent display at Beatles Story - represents a time when the fledgling Fab Four were in awe of Elvis Presley. This influence is currently being explored at Liverpool’s Elvis and us exhibition also at Beatles Story.
Jerry Goldman – Managing Director of Beatles Story says, “This collaboration is a terrific way for Beatles fans to see up close some of the world’s most valuable and rare Beatles memorabilia. We are very excited by the opportunity to work with Bonhams and know that our visitors will benefit from the opportunity to see George Harrison’s iconic jacket.
“Partnerships such as this further strengthen Liverpool’s tourism offer reinforcing the city as the ‘must visit’ destination for those looking to find out more about the history and legacy of The Beatles. We hope that this will be the first of many collaborations.”
Stephanie Connell, Director of the Entertainment Memorabilia department comments, “This leather jacket is instantly recognisable and was an important part of the Beatles image in their early years. The jacket will be the highlight of our December Entertainment auction which includes the Harrison Family collection among over 100 items relating to The Beatles. It is a great opportunity to exhibit the piece in Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles. This important piece of music memorabilia has never previously been offered at auction and we are excited to allow visitors to the Beatles Story the chance to view such an important piece of music history.”
