Seth Lakeman: Folk singer visits The Beatles Story

Folk singer-songwriter, guitarist and virtuoso fiddler Seth Lakeman took time out to visit The Beatles Story today ahead of his evening performance at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall.

Lakeman, a life-long Beatles fan, has successfully helped steer English folk into the musical mainstream with his festival appearances, captivating live shows and a series of best-selling albums since releasing the Mercury Prize nominated ‘Kitty Jay’ in 2004.

"It’s probably the usual story, my mother was a massive Beatles fan and it was passed down to me through record collections. I guess their music became part of my childhood upbringing, the soundtrack to the early years of my life."

"I love anything from Rubber Soul and Revolver. I think Revolver because they were starting to experiment and Rubber Soul of course for the nod to folk music. I’m a folk artist and some of those songs such as ‘Norwegian Wood’ really have that nice feel about them."

Seth will be joined by his multi-instrumental band for this concert, comprising of double bass, percussion, acoustic guitar and backing singers. So expect a trademark high energy performance.

"You can expect quite an upbeat and high energy show with all the back catalogue, including songs from ‘Kitty Jay’, and there’s a brand new album ‘Ballads Of The Broken Few’ which was produced by the legendary Ethan Johns, who has also worked with Paul McCartney."

"His father, Glyn Johns and George Martin were producers for The Beatles back in the 60s so even to have a link working with him and doing that last record was superb. So mostly upbeat but some nice low-key moments as well."

The BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner returns to Liverpool following his Philharmonic Hall debut last year.

"I’ve been to Liverpool many times, and played at the O2 Academy and Royal Philharmonic Hall many times. The city is amazing. I’m walking around with my tour manager from Germany and he is totally bowled over by Liverpool, it’s his favourite so far and we’ve already been to Oxford, Cambridge and London. You’ve managed to impress a Berliner!"
