Two Of Us: The Beatles Story and Höfner partnership

The Beatles Story is extremely proud to announce a new partnership deal with leading musical instrument manufacturers Höfner Guitars. The world-famous guitar producers have sponsored the addition of two new left-handed bass guitars, kindly donated to the award-winning The Beatles Story. They will join the Klaus Voormann Limited Edition Revolver Guitar already on display within the main exhibition and will be available for visitors to view on a permanent basis.

Paul McCartney purchased his first bass, a Höfner 500/1 model, from Steinway’s Musikhaus in Hamburg in 1961. He bought this bass when he took over as the group’s bass player following Stuart Sutcliffe’s announcement that he was leaving to go and study at Hamburg College of Art. This bass is very closely associated with the time when The Beatles played at the legendary Cavern Club, to such an extent that today this model of the Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass is known as “The Cavern Bass”.

Paul played the bass on all of the early Beatles hits and shows until he retired it late in 1963 when he received another Höfner Violin Bass. It was kept as a back-up bass and last used in 1968 during the Let It Be sessions when it was stolen and sadly, it has never been seen again. A replica of this instrument, the H500/1-6L, will now be placed in The Beatles Story’s replica Cavern Club area.

In 1963 Paul McCartney received his second Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass as his first was becoming road worn following so much use. It was delivered to him around the beginning of October 1963 and first seen on the television show “Thank Your Lucky Stars” on 10th October. This bass has remained with Paul ever since and can be heard on numerous massive hits, seen on millions of photographs and in many films.

Paul McCartney and his little Höfner bass are known together throughout the world, he plays that same bass he received in 1963 at every show! It is therefore fitting for the H500/1-62 bass to be shown in The Beatles Story’s exhibit dedicated to Abbey Road Studios, since it was here that Paul used it to record some of the greatest songs ever produced.

Diane Glover, Marketing Manager at The Beatles Story said: “The addition of these two new guitars is most welcome, our visitors will love seeing these iconic instruments when visiting the exhibition. We are looking forward to working in partnership with Höfner going forward to ensure that our guests receive the most authentic and enjoyable experience that we can offer.”

Nick Wass, Marketing Manager at Höfner said: “Höfner is delighted to be working with The Beatles Story, it seems to us to be the natural thing to do. We have a very long association with The Beatles and are therefore proud to have our guitars displayed by the premier museum for the group. We look forward to doing more together in the future to bring visitors the very best Beatles exhibits to be found anywhere.”
