Beatles in India: George Harrison's 75th birthday

To celebrate what would’ve been George Harrison’s 75th birthday, The Beatles Story will be hosting a FREE afternoon dedicated to telling the story of George’s introduction to Indian music and spirituality.

This event will include a talk, given by Dr. Mike Jones of the University of Liverpool’s Music Department exploring the Indian influence on the Beatles from its origins, through to the Rishikesh episode and beyond.

He will be joined by Thomas McConnell, a Liverpool-based singer songwriter, who will provide musical demonstration throughout the session. Tom is signed to Deltasonic Records and is currently touring his new album with his band, TV ME. He played at the Philharmonic Hall in June last year as part of the concert George Harrison: The Beatles and Indian Music.

The Beatles Story have just launched an exciting new special exhibition, ‘Beatles in India’, which features memorabilia, imagery and exclusive personal accounts from the people who were with the band in Rishikesh, 1968.

George celebrated his 25th birthday with friends and band members at the Ashram and the very fact that the Beatles went to Rishikesh is traceable to George’s personal interest in Indian classical music and spiritual thought.

George had a significant spiritual connection with India, and became fascinated with the sitar, an instrument which he studied with guru Ravi Shankar. He was introduced to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s system of Transcendental Meditation via his wife Pattie Boyd, which ultimately inspired the trip to Rishikesh in 1968.

This session will look at where it all started for “the Quiet Beatle” and how his interest inspired many of The Beatles’ great songs. It will also look at the controversy surrounding the band’s time spent in Rishikesh and how there is still plenty of evidence that the impact of the Maharishi teachings were longer-lasting than might first appear.

This event will take place in The Beatles Story's Fab4 Cafe at the Albert Dock on Sunday 25th February, 4pm - 6pm. Tickets are not required although it is recommended that visitors view the new ‘Beatles in India’ exhibit before attending the talk.
