In this debut episode of The Beatles Story Podcast, host Claire Simmo explores the fascinating relationship between The Beatles and fashion, from Liverpool’s changing style scene and the rise of the mini-skirt to the iconic suits, accessories and outfits that helped define an era.
Claire is joined by Debbie Greenberg, Liverpool-born author, former fashion model and lifelong Beatles fan who attended all 292 of The Beatles’ performances at the Cavern Club between 1961 and 1963, and Gary Astridge, leading authority on Ringo Starr’s drums and drum equipment and collaborator with Ringo on Beats & Threads. Joining them is The Beatles Story’s Mason Griffiths, bringing insights into the stories behind the exhibition’s fashion and accessories.
Together, they delve into Liverpool fashion in the 1960s, how music influenced what young people wore, and how The Beatles’ own style evolved as they went from Cavern Club regulars to global icons. Debbie shares her first-hand memories of seeing the band perform in Liverpool, as well as stories from her book Cavern Club: The Inside Story.
We also uncover the stories behind some fascinating items connected to The Beatles, including John Lennon’s iconic glasses, original 1960s accessories and the story of tailor Dougie Millings, who helped shape The Beatles’ image and created some of the band’s most memorable suits.
Gary takes us inside Ringo Starr’s fashion journey, revealing how the drummer’s personal style developed throughout the 1960s and beyond, and sharing stories from Beats & Threads, his collaboration with Ringo exploring the clothes, drums and history behind his extraordinary career.
And somehow, along the way, there’s even an FBI sting…
