Green Meanies

Inspired by the Blue Meanies from Yellow Submarine, our staff sustainability group has proudly adopted the name Green Meanies! This passionate team of eco-champions is dedicated to guiding our company toward a greener, more sustainable future.

From supporting in evaluating policies to championing initiatives across the business, the Green Meanies ensure that sustainability is a core part of everything we do.

With their guidance, we’re turning ideas into action and making real, positive change for our planet.

Net zero carbon

We’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and creating a greener future. Every step we take brings us closer to a net zero carbon impact:

  • Renewable Hosting: Our website is hosted by Digital Ocean via Equinix, powered by 100% renewable energy in the UK.
  • Energy-Efficient Lighting: LED lighting is used throughout our sites to cut energy use. We get by with a little help from LEDs!
  • Hybrid Working: By offering flexible working options, we’ve reduced energy use by 40% in our Commercial Suite, helping us reduce unnecessary emissions.

Due to energy saving initiatives put in place across the business we reduced annual energy consumption by 5% across our Albert Dock site from 2022 to 2024.

Waste reduction

We are getting by “with a little help from our friends” in our endeavours to reduce waste and protect the planet. Every choice we make, from our suppliers, retail packaging to café services, is designed to have a positive impact.

  • Packaging: Compostable or recycled whenever possible.
  • Shredding: Secure shredding materials get a second life through recycling.
  • Souvenir Teddy Bears: Made from 100% recycled plastic.
  • Fab4 Café: Refill your bottle for free and help us reduce single-use plastics.

Social value

We believe that businesses should “Help!” make a positive difference, both for our employees and the wider community. We’re proud to support initiatives that promote fairness, inclusion, and sustainability:

  • Fair Pay: All our employees are paid a real Living Wage, and this is reviewed annually.
  • Charity Support: We offer free raffle prizes for Merseyside-based charities, supplying 176 prizes between April 2024 and 2025! We’re also proud to support initiatives including Nordoff Robbins, KIND, and The Material World Foundation through promotion and fundraising.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: In partnership with Strawberry Field, we provide work placements for volunteers in the Steps to Work programme.
  • Education Support: Free places on school trips are available for Pupil Premium children who receive free school meals. We’ve welcomed 481 eligible pupils since April 2024!
  • Sustainable Food Choices: Our café offers vegetarian and vegan options, with discounts every Meat Free Monday.
  • Local Sourcing: We strive to use local produce and suppliers wherever possible, supporting our community and reducing environmental impact.

Conservation

We believe that even everyday tasks can make a difference. That’s why our secure shredding service is fully recycled, proving that a day in the life at our office can contribute to a greener future.

  • 2024 Impact: Recycling our shredding saved the equivalent of 13.5 trees.
  • Since 2019: Our efforts have preserved a total of 92.5 trees, protecting forests and supporting a healthier planet. We’ve also reduced our printing habits by an impressive 60%!
  • Let It Bee: In August 2025, we launched a partnership with Southport and District Beekeepers, sponsoring four new honeybee hives named John, Paul, George, and Ringo. We’re ‘buzzing’ to support local biodiversity by giving these bees a home!

Travel

We believe that the journey matters as much as the destination. We’re helping our visitors and employees “Get Back” to greener ways of commuting while reducing our overall environmental impact:

  • Bike2Work Scheme: Encouraging employees to cycle to work. It’s healthy for them, and healthier for the planet.
  • Subsidised Travel Passes: Our travel passes make it easier for staff to use public transport, with a 70% uptake across the business!
  • Hybrid Working: By giving office-based staff the option to work remotely, we reduce the need for daily commuting, helping us to reduce traffic and lower emissions.
  • Greener travel: We help our customers get here using eco-friendly transport options, and we even offer discounted entry for those arriving by train through National Rail!
