Poster boys: New memorabilia goes on display at the Beatles Story, Albert Dock
Most of the time when we bring new memorabilia into the exhibition it comes from a collector looking for a home for their prized possession; but for a poster that came into the exhibition last week the story is very different.
In July 2013 workers who were working on refurbishing a Merseyrail train station uncovered a poster that was promoting a show which featured Little Richard and The Beatles. The billboard poster dates back to 1962 and advertises the band who were playing as a support act to legendary rock and roll performer Little Richard.
Little Richard - The star was admired by The Beatles
The ticket price for the concert was 10 shillings and 6d, just over 50p in today's currency and also featured Merseybeat band Lee Curtis and the All-Stars.
Merseyrail projects engineer Paul Collins said: “The contractors on site were ripping some boards off when they found the poster. They knew straight away that it was something important and needed to be saved.”
The Merseybeat Room - The Mersey Beat office
The poster goes on display in the Beatles Story, Albert Dock in the Merseybeat Room. The room looks at how promotion from Bill Harry's music publication Mersey Beat helped The Beatles and also other bands from the 'merseybeat' era.
