Back In The USSR: a special Russian donation

Renowned Russian sculptor Leonty Usov visited The Beatles Story in Liverpool today with a very special gift – a set of wooden sculptured portraits of the Fab Four.

Mr Usov is an acclaimed artist who has previously hosted a number of exhibitions internationally including in the UK. The four wooden sculptures have been carved out of Siberian Pine which is local to Usov’s home in Tomsk.

The artist visited the award-winning attraction accompanied by a VIP delegation from the Russian Embassy. Joe Flannery, Cultural Ambassador for Liverpool and former booking agent for The Beatles, also attended to accept the sculptures on behalf of The Beatles Story.

In addition to presenting the portraits, Usov showed a film called ‘Birth of The Beatles in Siberia’ - and musicians from Tomsk performed using traditional instruments in the Fab4 Cafe.

Usov said: “Right before we left Siberia, we had made a presentation of the project in our city, Tomsk. It was called ‘The Beatles: Back in UK’. We are so happy that The Beatles Story, Liverpool will be accepting our wooden stars. Welcome home, guys! Welcome home!”

Liverpool is one of the most popular destinations for Russian visitors to the UK, due largely to its music lineage and this donation isn’t the first Russian gift to be handed to the award-winning Liverpool attraction.

Martin King, Manager at The Beatles Story Liverpool said: “We were approached by the sculptor with a gift of the four sculpted heads of the Beatles. The museum is delighted to accept the gift, which represents the global reach of The Beatles’ music.

“Mr Usov’s sculptures are renowned and will be placed in our archive of treasures. We regularly place new exhibits related to The Beatles into our exhibition. We have recently installed the four Sergeant Pepper suits to celebrate 50 years since the release of the famous album”.
