Hello, Goodbye: Strawberry Field gates return home

The original iconic red gates to Strawberry Field are set to leave The Beatles Story later this month, before returning home to the Salvation Army’s exciting new development.

The gates have been on display at the award-winning attraction for nearly two years, to raise awareness and funds for the redevelopment project of Strawberry Field, which is set to open to the public for the first time in 2019.

Since going onto display, visitors of The Beatles Story have donated a total of £4767.84, which will now go towards the Strawberry Field project.

Once opened, Strawberry Field will feature an exhibition exploring the site’s history and its connection to John Lennon, a cafe, a shop and gardens for spiritual reflection. The centre will also be home to a training and work placement hub for young people with learning disabilities and the Salvation Army’s flagship ‘Steps to Work’ programme.

The site has been immortalised in song by John Lennon. His song ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, which was released by The Beatles alongside ‘Penny Lane’ as a double a-side single in 1967, was inspired by John’s memories of playing in the grounds of the old children’s home which used to reside there.

The original red gates, which were present at the time John Lennon would jump over the wall and into Strawberry Field, will leave The Beatles Story on 30th April 2019. See them now in the Fab4 Cafe at the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool. Tickets are not required!
