Brian Epstein: the fifth Beatle statue project

A five-week fundraising campaign has been launched in order to create a statue in honour of Liverpool-born Beatles manager, Brian Epstein.

The special announcement was made by a fundraising committee at the Epstein Theatre on Thursday 19th September, marking what would’ve been Brian’s 85th birthday.

The Beatles’ former manager is credited with catapulting the Fab Four to global success, yet there is no lasting tribute to recognise and celebrate the vital role he played in music history.

A small group of dedicated campaigners are now working tirelessly to redress the balance and a minimum target of £60,000 has been set in order to make the vision a reality.

The location for the statue has not yet been confirmed, however the committee welcomes suggestions from interested parties via social media as to where they would like to see the statue sited.

The project has already attained support from many city officials and celebrities including Merseybeat singer Beryl Marsden, Peter Hooton from Liverpool band The Farm, and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Anna Rothery.

The project also has the support of Liverpool-born actor Andrew Lancel, who has appeared in The Bill and Coronation Street, and has played Brian numerous times on stage. He appears in a short video supporting the statue project, which was played at the launch.

Sculptor Andy Edwards has been commissioned to create the statue. Andy is best known for his iconic sculpture of The Beatles located at Pier Head Liverpool, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. He also co-sculpted the statue of Cilla Black on Mathew Street, another musical act managed by Brian.

Andy has produced a clay bust and maquette to demonstrate how the 7ft sculpture of Brian will look. The maquette will be displayed in The Beatles Story’s Fab4 Cafe on Saturday 28th September and members of the public are encouraged to come along to see it and learn more about the project. Tickets are not required.
